What is Cub Scouts?

Cub Scouts is all about adventure, learning, and building character. Through a variety of activities, kids develop valuable skills, make lifelong friends, and explore the world around them. It’s a program that fosters personal growth, teamwork, and a sense of community, right here in our own backyard.

What does Pack 63 do?

Pack 63 participates in a wide range of activities, including:

  • Local Outdoor Adventures: Hiking, exploring the beautiful Kentucky landscapes, and learning about our local environment.
  • Skill Building: Learning practical skills like knot tying, first aid, and crafting, often within the familiar setting of our community.
  • Fun and Games: Engaging in exciting games, crafts, and activities that promote teamwork and problem-solving, creating lasting memories.
  • Community Service in Paris: Participating in projects that benefit the Paris, KY community, teaching the importance of giving back to our neighbors.
  • Character Development: Learning about core values like honesty, respect, and responsibility, shaping our future leaders.

The Cub Scout Program is structured by age/grade, with each level having its own unique focus:

  • Lion (Kindergarten):
    • An introductory program focused on fun and family involvement.
    • Activities: Simple nature walks, basic craft projects, games promoting teamwork, introduction to the Cub Scout program with parents, very basic safety instruction.
  • Tiger (1st Grade):
    • Exploring the world through adventures and activities.
    • Activities: Short hikes, nature observation, simple woodworking projects, participation in pack games, learning basic first aid, beginning knot tying, attending local community events, and early introduction to pinewood derby.
  • Wolf (2nd Grade):
    • Learning basic scouting skills and participating in group activities.
    • Activities: More advanced hiking, learning about local wildlife, participating in more complex craft projects, learning basic camping skills, first aid scenarios, more advanced knot tying, participation in community service projects, and increasing pinewood derby involvement.
  • Bear (3rd Grade):
    • Taking on more challenging tasks and developing leadership skills.
    • Activities: Longer hikes, exploring different types of ecosystems, advanced woodworking projects, learning about tools, more in depth camping skills, basic archery and BB gun safety and practice, planning and executing community service projects, and advanced pinewood derby building and racing.
  • Webelos (4th and 5th Grade):
    • Preparing for Boy Scouts, focusing on independence and advanced skills.
    • Activities: Overnight camping trips, advanced hiking and navigation, learning about outdoor survival skills, more complex craft and woodworking, more advanced archery and BB gun skills, leadership training, planning and leading group activities, and advanced pinewood derby work.
  • Arrow of Light (5th Grade):
    • The highest award in Cub Scouts, signifying readiness for Boy Scouts.
    • Activities: Advanced camping and outdoor skills, participating in Boy Scout troop activities, leadership roles within the pack, completing advanced projects, and demonstrating mastery of Cub Scout skills..

What is the relationship between Pack 63 and Troop 63?

Scouting America Pack 63, in Paris, KY, maintains a strong, supportive relationship with Troop 63 to ensure a seamless transition for our Arrow of Light recipients. Recognizing the significance of this pivotal moment, Pack 63 actively prepares our older Cub Scouts for the move to Troop 63 through joint activities, shared campouts, and coordinated meetings. This allows the Cub Scouts to become familiar with the Troop’s leadership, routines, and older scouts, fostering a sense of belonging before they even bridge. We focus on building a strong foundation in essential Scouting skills, ensuring our Arrow of Light scouts are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that await them in Troop 63.

The Crossover Ceremony for Pack 63 and Troop 63 is a celebratory event, symbolizing the culmination of the Cub Scout journey and the exciting start of their Scouts BSA adventure. Often held at a local park or community space, it involves a symbolic bridge crossing, representing the passage from childhood to adolescence within the Scouting framework. For our scouts, this ceremony is a moment of immense pride and anticipation. It’s a recognition of their hard work and dedication, and a welcoming into the Troop 63 family. The ceremony reinforces the continuity of the Scouting experience, emphasizing that the values and skills learned in Cub Scouts will continue to serve them as they progress through the ranks of Scouts BSA, all while staying within the familiar and supportive Scouting community of Paris, KY.
